From nothing to something (2): The short-sighted Dutchman

December 15, 2015

I think Margje Fikse was expecting an unkempt man with a long beard and with hair like dreadlocks. I think that before my arrival in her studio she imagined that I would be surrounded by shit flies, that I would be wearing three layers of clothes and would stink from 3 weeks of not showering, that I would be pushing a shopping cart with all my belongings in Aldi bags and half a liter of Schultenbräu in front of me into the NOS building and then sit down with her in the studio drunk, burping and shouting to talk about homelessness? But you just look good With some surprise she said "but you just look good"? It was like a world opened up for Margje in that moment, and you know Margje, I didn't even blame you. I think a lot of people have that image when they talk about homeless people. Fortunately for us homeless people, this is different. I bet most of us walk the streets unrecognized among others. Emergency shelter in Purmerend It was a week ago that I reported to the emergency shelter in Purmerend. It was 9 p.m. when the door opened and a

From nothing to something (1): Suddenly you know, you're going to be homeless

December 8, 2015

There are two ways I can look back on my life right now. I could start with "Homeless ex-con with no completed education seeks employment" or "Innovative award-winning entrepreneur begins new chapter. A world of difference, but both apt as can be. It's cold outside I think I've had a cold since the day I landed. My mother always jokingly says: you were born with a cold. I believe it so. I don't think I was born for these temperatures in Holland either, I said that 10 years ago and I keep repeating it. Still, it remains cold as I walk toward social services. Even though I have left many things behind, the large backpack I am carrying remains heavy. Actually I should say I am lucky I almost think out loud, at least it is not raining. Walk-in office hours It happens to be walk-in office hours when I walk in at the social services work station. You are in luck, says the gentle-looking lady at the welcome desk. I'll come with you right away, I don't think there's anyone else there so you can be helped right away. This is, I think, the second time in my life that I have received assistance.

Prosecutor: Leopoldo Lopez is actually innocent, I'm sorry

October 29, 2015

Last month, Leopoldo Lopez was sentenced to nearly 14 years in prison. The prosecutor then fled the country and says sorry, he was wrong. The judge gets promoted. A criminal case in Venezuela. Leopoldo Lopez Last month, opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez was sentenced in a Venezuelan court to more than 13 years in prison. The people, government leaders and many other organizations called for Lopez's release. Now including Franklin Nieves himself, the prosecutor responsible for the charges against the opposition leader. Nieves, the prosecutor Days after Lopez's conviction, Nieves fled from Venezuela to the United States, seeking asylum. In a video that came online last weekend, the ex-officer called the trial of Lopez a sham, a farce. Evidence was allegedly tampered with and he and his colleagues were pressured by the government. In the video, Nieves now apologizes from America to Leopoldo Lopez, Lopez's family and the people of Venezuela. "Lopez is innocent, I'm sorry." Nieves states to the Wallstreet Journal that human rights were ignored because it was impossible for Lopez's defense

analysis the panama summit becomes primarily a diplomatic chess game

April 10, 2015

Simultaneous chess at a high diplomatic level, focusing on corruption, oil and human rights. How a summit no one wanted to go to became the hippest summit of all time. An intriguing but frightening spectacle is unfolding these days in Latin America. This coming days in Panama is the 7th summit of the "Americas. A summit that brings together the leaders of 35 countries, including the Americas, Venezuela, Cuba and Guyana. What first seemed to be a boring meeting in Panama, with many cancellations, has suddenly become a hip summit that you 'must' attend as a country due to the developments of the past few weeks surrounding Cuba and Venezuela. The stakes of this summit are high for some countries, and prior to 'the summit' the game of chess is already in full swing. Simultaneous chess, that is. What developments America is disappointed in Venezuela. Things have not been going well between America and Venezuela for some time, but right now America believes Venezuela is violating human rights. Venezuela needs America, as a major economic partner. America, in turn, has an oil interest in Venezuela. Venezuela is angry with America for imposing sanctions on Venezuelan officials allegedly involved in

Psst... Becoming a millionaire with €5000?

February 17, 2015

Some of the bizarre events of recent weeks in Venezuela. Plus the week's tip for becoming a millionaire: "You have to buy when the blood is flowing through the streets," Lionel Walter de Rothschildt said. Image: Michel Baljet Venezuela is in a severe economic crisis. President Maduro was trying to find funding from allies during a world tour as the minimum wage sinks to 25 euros a month and popular pressure increases in the streets. Rapidly rising prices of products and increasing shortages now rule the day. While the world looks the other way, the government in Venezuela is making its political choices like a cornered cat. One result is that since a few days you can become a millionaire for just over five thousand euros. The judge who was arrested Last Wednesday, Judge Ali Fabricio Paredes was arrested. Judge Paredes had a day earlier sentenced drug lord Walid "The Turk" Makled to 14 years in prison. Judge Paredes is charged with having been "too lenient" in his sentence against Makled. The drug lord was previously arrested in Colombia. Both the United States and Venezuela had requested his extradition. This ran high politically because

Analysis: Venezuela is terminal

December 20, 2014

The end of Venezuela's "revolution" is in sight. The demand of a large part of the people to be freed from a hopeless existence and unbearable suffering is increasing. But what is the alternative? On to a military state Like former President Chavez, who eventually died of cancer, his country is incurably ill. Soon Venezuela, too, will be put out of its misery. It is still unknown whether this will be done through euthanasia, or whether a natural course will be chosen. Meanwhile, the demand of a large part of the people to be delivered from a hopeless existence and unbearable suffering is increasing. But what is the alternative? Corruption is culture Corruption in Venezuela is a culture handed down from generation to generation. It is in all walks of life and is the cause of much suffering. From Chavez who enriched himself into a billionaire during his presidency, to members of the Guardia National assisting in illegal smuggling of gasoline and food merchandise. But even before the revolution, corruption was a cultural legacy. For example, former President Raúl Leoni (1964) used 10 million in public funds to finance, among other things

From unemployed hipster to UN Security Council member

November 30, 2014

Maria Gabriela Chavéz, the daughter of Hugo Chavéz, was recently appointed to the 15-member UN Security Council. This is the first job in Maria's life. How did Maria go from party girl, to member of the UN? Maria Gabriela Chavéz (34), born March 12, 1980, is one of the five children of former President of Venezuela Hugo Chavéz. In the years before Chavéz's death from cancer, Maria was considered a "First Lady. She had a leading role in Chavéz's life. Maria, who dropped out of her first degree program for unknown reasons, then finished studying journalism. She spent the rest of her 34-year existence living her Paris Hilton-like hipster lifestyle with world travel and partying. As of Jan. 1, she is part of the UN Security Council -as one of 15 members- and will spend the next two years co-deciding on issues such as Ukraine, ISIS and terrorism. The rice queen Uncontroversial is not Maria. She was recently linked to import corruption from Argentina, earning her the nickname "the rice queen. By keeping the price of imported rice artificially extremely high, she is said to have made millions while Venezuela's food shortages mount. There are voices

Venezuela: The powerless 'monopoly' millionaire

November 26, 2014

Dutch hotel owner in Venezuela Frank is fretting. He would like to return to the Netherlands, away from the corruption and hyperinflation. But it can't be done. Image: Guy Van den Branden He sits quietly but looks somewhat confused and sad in front of him. In his - self-created - safe environment, he ponders his opportunities, or rather, his lack of opportunities. He is now the king of the world with his hotel, staff and piles of money bills, but outside these walls he is a poor Dutchman, whom we will call Frank for now. Years ago, when Frank invested his millions earned from his discos in Brabant in Venezuela, he couldn't believe his luck. Now that the country is in crisis and slipping, he wants to leave with his daughter. But it's too late. Frank is getting older and is somewhat forgetful, sometimes so much so that I fear he is suffering from dementia. But the memories from back then are still there. The young wild years, doing everything God had forbidden. The most beautiful girls, the friendliest people, being able to go really far away and disappear into the jungle for a time. But now many of his friends

Eddy is dead, tortured and burned alive

November 15, 2014

I have known Eddy for about six months, my friends for more than 10 years. Eddy, a German man with a beard who was regularly called Santa Claus by children. He was not liked by everyone. He was gruff, stubborn and opinionated but had a genuinely good heart. Eddy is no more; he was horribly murdered. And as with 96 percent of the 25,000 murders every year, this murder will never be solved. Indeed, after his murder, he was also robbed by people in the neighborhood and the police. In recent years, Eddy lived in Ocumare, a coastal village that has recently suffered greatly from the decline in tourism. His life before that, he had traveled all over the world, and there were many stories about that over a beer. Eddy was well known in Ocumare and somewhat infamous. Eddy dealt in meat and cheese, investing money where it was needed. 25,000 murders a year Now Eddy is dead, last Saturday they tortured, robbed and set him on fire. Eddy is not alone. In Venezuela, 25,000 people were murdered last year (these are official figures, unofficially the number is higher). 96 percent of these cases are never

Voluntarily incarcerated in Tocoron, Venezuela's most notorious prison

October 16, 2014

Tocoron is Venezuela's most notorious prison. There are hundreds of deaths every year and really anything can be had there. Weapons, cocktails and even a crocodile can be found within the walls. I volunteered to be locked up there. Normally the access road to the prison that overlooks an open field is deserted. This morning, however, when I arrive on my motorcycle at 7 a.m., the road has been transformed into a veritable boulevard. I park at a sort of secure stall built up for the day and leave my helmet, phone and other belongings with the same people. It is still early and the gate to the Tocoron prison will not open for at least another hour. Me and my fixer decide to have coffee at one of the temporarily constructed restaurants. 7500 prisoners My fixer is a Venezuelan guy around my age. He has been holding a relative "inside" for a year, convicted of armed robbery. Soon he will be my guide, when I will have myself locked inside the walls of Tocoron. Tocoron is notorious. Hundreds of people a year die there because of violence. Originally, the prison was built for 900 prisoners, but
